Get to know the Woodlands, TX

The Woodlands is located 28 miles north of Houston.  Oil investor George P. Mitchell started the community in 1974 in an attempt to begin a HUD financed Title VII town.  The community was initially managed by The Woodlands Corporation, an extension of Mitchell Energy & Development.  It began as a suburban development and bedroom community Mitchell hoped would attract the city slickers from Houston.  While many did not believe the community would succeed, it continues to grow residentially as well as commercially, with many companies moving there.  The many corporate offices in The Woodlands represent an important part of the community’s economy.  These offices include the headquarters of the Anadarko Petroleum Corporation and Chicago Bridge & iron’s worldwide administrative office.  Notable residents have included Chamillionaire, Jack Ingram, and Adrian Peterson.
