Get to know Houston, TX

The city of Houston is the most populous city in the Lone Star State and the fourth most populous city in the country.  The city is named after the famed General Sam Houston.  The city began in 1836 when the Allen brothers from New York purchased the land to create a city.  By 1860, it was a commercial and railroad hub, becoming the railroad center of Texas by 1890.  By 1900 efforts were underway to make Houston a viable deep-water port.  The discovery of oil at nearby Spindletop the following year began the development of the petroleum industry.  The port was opened in 1914, and by 1940 Houston had become the most populous city in Texas.  The Second World War brought a boom to the city with the petroleum industry and other manufacturing jobs, as well as an influx of new workers.  1945 saw the formation of the Texas Medical Center in Houston under the M.D. Anderson Foundation.

Houston Today

Today it is the world’s largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions.  In 1961, NASA established the Manned Spacecraft Center, which was renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in 1973.  This led to the nickname of “Space City” in 1967.  The population continued to boom as people moved for jobs.  The 1980s saw a population and economic downturn as the oil and space industries suffered.  The subsequent increase in oil prices has helped to lift the economy since the 2000s.  The city has been called the most air conditioned place on earth, but is also one of the most ozone-polluted cities in the United States.  The economy is largely based on the energy industry, as well as the Port of Houston and the Houston Ship Channel.  The city is known for its diversity, it is the most diverse city in the state, as well as its status as a global city.
