Get to know Garland, TX
The city of Garland is a northest suburb of Dallas. The area around Garland began to see immigrants moving to area by the mid 19th century.By the late 1800s, two communities, Embree and Duck Creek, occupied the area. When rivalry between the towns ensued over the Santa Fe Railroad depot and where the local post should be placed, a Dallas County judge asked the post office to be put between the two communities. The post office was moved in 1887 and the city of Garland began, named after U.S. Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland. Shortly after, Embree and Duck Creek combined with Garland to form the city, which was incorporated in 1891. 1920 saw the local businessmen create a new electrical generator plant, which would later form Garland Power and Light, which still provides the city power today. The city experienced a post-war population boom for several decades. Recent decades have still seen the population grow, but at a much slower rate. Resistol Hats, which manufactures premium hats that have been worn around the world, has been a major contributor to Garland’s manufacturing base since it moved to Garland in 1938. Some of the largest employers in Garland include the Garland Independent School District, the City of Garland, and Baylor Medical Center. Notable residents of Garland have included LeAnn Rimes and Gene Summers.
