Get to know Dallas, TX

The major city of Dallas is one of the most populous cities in Texas as well as the United States.  The Caddo people long inhabited the area of Dallas before Spanish colonists claimed the land in the 18th century.  The territory remained under Spanish rule until 1821 when Mexico declared independence from Spain.  Changes occurred again in 1836 when Anglo-American settlers declared independence from Spain to form the nation the Republic of Texas.  Although it is unclear where the name came from, the settlement was named Dallas in 1841 by John Neely Bryan.  Dallas was incorporated as a city of the United States in 1856.  By the end of the 19th century, Dallas had become a business and trading center because of the many railroads running though it.  As it industrialized, workers were attracted to Dallas from other parts of Texas as well as the South and Midwest.  The city has one of the largest concentrations of corporate headquarters of publically traded companies, including Texas Instruments, which is headquartered in Dallas.  The large number of corporate relocations to Dallas in addition to the expansion of regional offices has led to a boom in the economy of Dallas.  In fact, Forbes named Dallas “The Best Place for Business and Careers” of Texas’ largest cities in 2015.  Popular attractions include the annual Texas State Fair and the Sixth Floor Museum in the Texas School Book Depository, where Lee Harvard Oswald shot and killed President John F. Kennedy.  The city has long been a hotbed of cuisine and art, as well offering numerous parks for outdoor recreation.  Dallas has a large sports culture as well.  There are six professional sports teams associated with the city, including the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and the NHL’s Dallas Stars.  The city is at the lower end of Tornado Alley and is vulnerable to extreme weather, such as tornadoes and hailstorms.  The population has consistently seen growth, although recent decades have seen a slower rate of increase.
