Get to know Conroe, TX
The city of Conroe was named after Isaac Conroe, a Houston lumberman and Union cavalry officer who founded a sawmill in the area in 1881. The city initially grew as people were drawn to the lumber and oil industries. Since the twentieth century the city has experienced steady growth. With the construction of Interstate 45, Conroe saw an influx of new residents coming from nearby Houston. There was a construction boom in the mid-2000s as residents poured in. Conroe is near Lake Conroe, which hosts year round water and cultural events. The largest employers in Conroe is the Conroe Independent School District.
