Atascocita is a census-designated place about 18 miles northeast of Houston. A part of the greater Houston area, construction started in the 1970s and had fifteen neighborhoods by the 1990s. Rapid growth in the area led to the construction of Atascocita High School in 2006, which is modeled after Thomas Jefferson’s estate Monticello. It has been named as one of the best places to retire by U.S. News & World Report. Atascocita is known for its recreational activities, including golf, tennis, fishing, and boating. The scenic Lake Houston is in the area as well. Another notable attraction is the Lindsay/Lyons Park and Sports Complex, a 136 acre complex that houses barbecue grills, playgrounds, and sporting fields.
