Get to know Harlingen, TX
The city of Harlingen lies in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas. It was founded in 1904 when Lon C. Hill desired to turn the Arroyo Colorado into a commercial waterway. The area was already a distribution, shipping, and industrial center due to its location. Hill named the town he founded after a city in the Netherlands, and it was incorporated in 1910. War brought a military base and airfield to the town. When the base closed in 1962, local enterprise worked to utilize the abandoned army structure, and the groundwork was laid for progress and diversifying the economy as the population dropped with the end of the military presence. Notable attractions include the annual Rio Grande Valley Music Festival. The city receive an All-American City title in 1992 for its spirit of volunteerism.
