Get to know Brownsville, TX

Brownesville is the county seat of Cameron County and sits at the southernmost tip of Texas.  It is situated on the northern bank of the Rio Grande, with Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico just south of the city across the border.  The city has been recognized as having a highly pro-business climate and is ranked one of the most inexpensive places to live in the United States.  However, it also has one of the nation’s highest poverty rates and is often cited as having the highest percentage of residents below the federal poverty line of all cities in the United States.  The city has been named one of the 12 metropolitan areas in the United States with the cleanest air by Forbes.  The Port of Brownsville is a cornerstone of the city’s economy.  The Brownsville Independent School District is also a key employer in the community.  Building is currently underway for the SpaceX South Texas Launch Site.  The private space launch facility is expected to draw $85 million to the city as well as create hundreds of jobs in the next decade.  Each year tens of thousands of guests partake in Charro Days in February.  The three-day festival is a two-nation fiesta to celebrate the friendship between Brownswille and Matamoros, its sister city just south of the border.  AirFiesta and the Latin Jazz Festival are other popular events in the city.
