Get to know Beaumont, TX
The southeastern city of Beaumont lies about 90 miles east of Houston. Originally, the area focused on the lumber, farming, and port industries. The discovery of oil at Spindletop in 1901 with the Lucas gusher launched the area into becoming one of the major petro-chemical refining areas in the United States. It is a part of the Gulf Coast’s major industrial area known as the Golden Triangle. The city has experienced several hurricanes over the years, the most damaging being the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 and Hurricane Ike in 2008. Some of the largest employers include Conn’s Appliances and ExxonMobil. The headquarters of Jason’s Deli is also in Beaumont. The nation’s fourth largest seaport is the Port of Beaumont, which also plays a large role in the city’s economy.
