Get to know Baytown, TX

Although settlement of the area began in the early 1800s, the city of Baytown was not founded until 1948.  The city originally was three separate towns that were drawn to the area with the discovery of oil in what is now called the Goose Creek Oil Field.  1916 saw the founding of the Humble Oil and Refining Company.  The company’s Baytown Refinery would become one of Exxon’s largest refineries in the world.  ExxonMobil, Bayer, and Chevron Phillips are some of the area’s largest employers.  Popular attractions include the Baytown Nature Center, a wildlife sanctuary and recreational area, as well as the Royal Purple Raceway.  Famous residents have included Gary Busey and Renee Zellweger.
