Get to know Newark, NJ
The city of Newark is New Jersey’s most populous city. It began in 1666 when Connecticut Puritans under Robert Treat settled the area. It was organized as the Newark Tract in 1693 and was a part of the state’s first group of townships under the New Jersey Legislature’s Township Act of 1798. The City of Newark was incorporated in 1836. Industrial growth in the 19th and 20th centuries led to population increases. In the second half of the 20th century, decline in industry and racial tensions and riots led to decline in the city. Newark has seen revitalization since the 1990’s though. Newark is the largest employment center in New Jersey. In addition to being an air, shipping, and rail hub, it is also home to the headquarters to a number of companies, including Prudential and Audible.com. Notable attractions include Branch Brook Park, which has the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in America and the Newark Museum.
