Get to know Oak Park, IL

Oak Park sits just west of the city of Chicago in Cook County.  The village was established in 1902 and its population grew throughout the twentieth century, peaking in 1940.  In the 1960s the village made a concerted effort to promote racial integration, passing a fair housing ordinance in 1968, which was largely successful.  It also has a long history of alcohol prohibition.  No alcohol could be sold within village limits until 1973, when restaurants and hotels were permitted to serve alcohol at meals, and it was not until 2002 that select grocery stores were permitted to sell packaged liquor.  It has a focus on historic preservation as well with three historic home districts, including homes by Frank Lloyd Wright and Seward Gunderson.  Some notable Oak Park residents include Ernest Hemingway and Betty White.
