Get to know Northbrook, IL
The Cook County village of Northbrook is a part of Chicago’s North Shore. Originally name Shermerville after the man who donated land for the first railroad station, the village decided to rebrand in 1921 after become notorious as a rowdy saloon town. Edward Landwehr submitted Northbrook as an option during a contest to rename the community, and the name was adopted in 1923. The affluent community houses the corporate headquarters of Underwriters Laboratories and Crate & Barrel. Following World War II the population began to grow, with huge growth occurring during the Baby Boom. More recent decades have seen slower increases to the population.
