Get to know Santa Clarita, CA

Santa Clarita lies roughly 35 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.  A settlement in the Santa Clara river valley was originally known as little Santa Clara to distinguish it from the Northern mission city of Santa Clara.  Eventually little Santa Clara became Santa Clarita.  Henry Newhall, a businessman who made his fortune during the Gold Rush, bought land for ranching in the 1870’s.  His heirs incorporated the Newhall Land and Farming Company after his death and oversaw the development of the communities that would make up Santa Clarita. Filming came to the area at the turn of the century, bringing actors Tom Mix, a young John Wayne, and William S. Hart and Harry Carey, who both made homes in the Santa Clarita Valley.  The communities in the valley united to incorporate as the City of Santa Clarita in 1987.   Princess Cruises and MannKind are based in the city, with the top employers including Six Flags Magic Mountain and Princess Cruises.  Notable residents have included Allyson Felix and Naya Rivera.
