Get to know San Clemente, CA

The Orange County city of San Clemente is known as the “Spanish Village by the Sea.”  The area was largely uninhabited before the Mission San Juan Capistrano was established in 1776.  There was little development until 1925 when Ole Hansen purchased land.  He believed the climate, beaches, and soil would provide an oasis to Californians who were tired of the city.  He named the city after San Clemente Island.  Hanson succeeding in promoting the area and selling property.  In 1928 the City of San Clemente was incorporated.  In 1969 Richard Nixon bought a vacation home, which would be nicknamed the “Western White House.”  The city is home to several manufacturers.  The largest employers include the Capistrano Unified School District and ICU Medical.  Popular attractions include Max Berg Plaza Park and the many surfing spots.  Famous residents have included the band Fu Manchu and skateboarder Ryan Sheckler.
