Get to know Pomona, CA
In the Pomona Valley between the Inland Empire and the San Gabriel Valley lies the Los Angeles County city of Pomona. It got its name from the Roman goddess of fruit. The area was first settled by Ricardo Vejar and Ygnacio Palomares in 1830’s before the United States gained control of California. It had become the western anchor of the citrus growing region by the 1880’s with the arrival of the railroad. It was incorporated as a city in 1888. Pomona was called the “Queen of the Citrus Belt” in the 1920’s. It was used as a movie previewing location in the 1940’s. The top employers in Pomona include the Pomona Unified School District, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Famous residents have included Jessica Alba and Richie Sandoval.
