Get to know Hemet, CA

The Riverside County city of Hemet lies in the San Jacinto Valley.  It was established as a farm settlement in 1858.  In 1887 the Lake Hemet Water Company & Hemet Land Company was formed and grew the town as Lake Hemet was formed in 1895.  It was incorporated as a city in 1910.  It is the home of California’s official outdoor play, The Ramona Pageant, which began in 1923.  The Ryan School of Aeronautics opened in 1940 to train Army Air Force pilots in World War II.  The economy of Hemet is based on retail, government, and health and education services.  The city’s largest employers are the Hemet Unified School District and the Valley Health System.  Notable attractions include the Western Science Center and Diamond Valley Lake.  Famous residents of Hemet include Bill Murray and Mickey Rooney, Jr.
