Get to know Fresno, CA

Fresno is the county seat in the San Joaquin Valley.  It was named for the many ash trees, “fresno” in Spanish, in the area.  The town was established as Fresno Station in 1872 along a new Southern Pacific Railroad line.  Fresno incorporated as a city in 1885.  The population exploded following World War II.  In 1958 Bank of America launched the first successful credit card, the BankAmericard.  The city is the economic hub of the San Joaquin Valley .  The main employers are the Community Medical Centers and the City of Fresno.
