Get to know Carlsbad, CA

The City of Carlsbad is a seaside resort community in San Diego County, and is known as “The Village by the Sea.”  In the 1880’s it was discovered that the water was similar in chemical makeup to water in some of the world’s most renowned spas.  The town was named after the Bohemian spa town of Karlsbad in the present day Czech Republic.  The Carlsbad Land and Mineral Water Company was formed to capitalize on this find and the area experienced growth in the 1880’s.  The community also developed agriculturally, growing citrus, avocados, and olives.  It incorporated in 1952 to avoid annexation by neighboring Oceanside.  Today, Carlsbad economy is based mainly on IT, video game development, manufacturing, robotics, technology, and tourism.  It is also home to a number of golf manufacturers, including TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Company.  It is the golf manufacturing capital of the world, and is sometimes referred to as “Titanium Valley.”  The city’s largest employers include ViaSat and Life Technologies Corporation.  There are a number of attractions, including the Legoland California Resort and Carlsbad State Beach.  Famous residents have included Tony Hawk and Shaun White.
