Get to know Bellflower, CA

The city of Bellflower is a suburb of LA.  It was founded in 1906 by F.E. Woodruff and originally called Somerset.  With the introduction of the post office in 1909, the city changed its name in honor of the bellefleur apple that was grown in local orchards.  The area remained a farming stronghold, producing apples and then milk through World War II.  Following the war, property values and threats of annexation forced the farmers to relocate.  The area then built large housing developments and became a commercial shopping thoroughfare.  The city was incorporated in 1957.  Bellflower Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente are the city’s largest employers.  Notable residents have included athletes Nomar Garciaparra and James Harden.
