The city of Niagara Falls sits next to the Niagara Falls and the Niagara Gorge along the Canadian border.  The area was controlled by Native Americans before Europeans began arriving in the area in the 17th century.  The city was incorporated in 1892 and grew as an industrial area due to the power offered by the Niagara River and the Falls.  This attracted immigrants to the area in search of jobs.  Through the first half of the 20th century industry and tourism thrived, bringing prosperity to the city.  The population peaked in the 1960’s, but has experienced consistent decline since as manufacturing jobs have left.  The economy currently relies on tourism.  However, the city faces steep competition from Niagara Falls, Ontatio, which boasts a stronger economy and tourism industry.  Notable attractions include the Niagara Falls State Park, which houses a number of attractions.  The city is also known for its recycling mascot, Totes McGoats.
