Get to know Lake Elsinore, CA

The city of Lake Elsinore is in west Riverside County.  The area used to be Rancho La Laguna.  In 1883 Franklin H. Heald bought the land with partners Donald Graham and William Collier to start a new town.  In 1884 a station of the California Southern Railroad was erected in the area.  The city of Elsinore was established in 1888 on the shore of the natural freshwater lake that would become Lake Elsinore.  It became a resort for visitors seeking therapeutic treatments at the mineral springs by the lake.  In the 19th century, the economy relied on mining, ranching, and agriculture.  Celebrities frequented the city as an escape in the first half of the 20th century.  The lake was used to test seaplanes during World War II, with a Douglas Aircraft plant located in the city.  In 1972 the original name of Elsinore was renamed Lake Elsinore.  The city saw a massive increase in population in the 21st century, transforming the small lakeside city into a bedroom community for middle-class professionals.  The main employers include Lake Elsinore Outlets and the Lake Elsinore Unified School District.
