Get to know Rancho Cucamonga, CA

At the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains is the San Bernardino city of Rancho Cucamonga.  The Kukamongan Native Americans were the area’s first settlers.  In 1839 the governor of Mexico, Juan Bautista Alvarado, gave the area of Cucamonga to notorious smuggler and Los Angeles merchant Tubercio Tapia.  Tapia established California’s first winery on the land.  Rancho Cucamonga was bought by John Rains in 1858.  The town flourished in the ensuing years and the completion of irrigation tunnels in 1887 allowed olives, peaches, citrus, and vineyards to prosper. Rancho Cucamonga was incorporated in 1977 when the communities of Alta Loma, Cucamonga, and Etiwanda merged.  The logistics industry is important to Rancho Cucamonga’s economy, as well as agriculture. Rancho Cucamonga serves as the main setting for the Comedy Central show Workaholics. The main employers are Etiwanda School District and Chaffey College.
