Get to know Norwalk, CA

Norwalk is roughly 17 miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles.  It is part of the Gateway Cities Council of Governments.  After the Spanish claimed the land, settlers and missions flourished in the 18th century.  The El Camino Real trail ran through the area.  Present day Norwalk was part of Rancho Los Nietos in 1784.  The Rancho was subdivided when the United States gained control of California.  In 1869 the Sproul brothers from Oregon purchased the land in Corazon de los Valles, the “Heart of the Valleys”.  With the arrival of the railroad to the area in 1873 the Sprouls deeded land to the Anaheim Branch railroad for a passenger stop.  In 1874 the town was recorded as Norwalk, but was not incorporated as a city until 1957.  Norwalk’s largest employers are the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, Cerritos College, and the Los Angeles County Registrar.  Famous residents have included Pat Nixon and Ron Rinehart.
