Get to know Murrieta, CA

Murrieta is a Riverside County city in the Inland Empire region.  Ezequiel Murrieta purchased the Rancho Pauba and Rancho Temecula Mexican land grants to raise sheep in the 19th century.  When Ezequiel returned to Spain, he gave the land to his younger brother Juan.  In 1873 Juan brought sheep to the valley to graze in the meadows.  In 1882 a train depot for the Southern California Railroad was constructed, bringing people to the valley.  Tourism supported the town until the trains stopped in 1935.  The area remained a small country town until the 1980’s when a boom in suburban construction brought an influx of people.  In 1991 Murrieta was incorporated as a city.  The largest employers in the city are the Murrieta Valley Unified School District and the Southwest Healthcare System.  Notable residents have included Lindsay Davenport and Rickie Fowler
