Get to know Huntington Beach, CA

The Orange County city of Huntington Beach is known as “Surf City.”  The land was apart of Rancho Los Nietos in the 18th century.  It was named after businessman Henry E. Huntington, a railroad magnate who was responsible for the development of the area and the promotion of the real estate.  The Huntington Beach Company was the original developer of the town.  The pier was constructed in 1904.  Huntington Beach was incorporated as a city in 1909.  The city began as an agricultural economy, with celery and sugar beets as the main crops.  Oil was found in the area and reserves were built.  However as the oil was depleted and prices for land increased, most of the rigs were pushed out.  Oil and industry are important to the economy of Huntington Beach, as is tourism.  The largest employers in the city are Boeing and Quiksilver.  Popular events include the U.S. Open of Surfing and the annual Cruise of Lights Boat Tour.  Jason Lee and Reel Big Fish are famous residents of Huntington Beach.
